1 Nephi 16

Chapter 16

The wicked take the truth to be hard—Lehi’s sons marry the daughters of Ishmael—The Liahona guides their course in the wilderness—Messages from the Lord are written on the Liahona from time to time—Ishmael dies; his family murmurs because of afflictions. About 600–592 B.C.

-------------------------------------------

One of my favorite lines in the scriptures is in verse 2: "wherefore the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth the to the very center."

Isn't that the truth even these days?

The beginning of this chapter is a high-point for Nephi.  He just received an angelic vision, he stood up to his brothers and they were actually listening to him.  He got married. He had joy and great hopes at this time.  Things were looking great for him...

then the Lord tells them to pack up and leave it all behind- again.

Then- his bow breaks, his brothers get mad, even his dad- his leader and hero- began to murmur.

Talk about going from light to dark!

But Nephi stays faithful and is blessed. It's that faith the caused the Liahona to work again.

That's a perfect reflection of life: Things are going great, then we are tested and based on our faith, we are blessed by the guidance of the Holy Ghost, among other blessings.

It seems pretty clear as we read, but much harder in our world today.  Lost jobs, sleepless nights (Jo;-))
injuries, children straying and so forth.

Nephi teaches us that faith and enduring truly is the key.

  1. By small things great things are brought to pass... but only with faith, diligence and heed.

We look for direction though faith, but we must obey that direction. If we are not obeying, we will not be given more direction. It's a circle of blessings that we have control over.

I should save this for Saturday... but... it fits with my train of thought today.'It's the height of disloyalty to pray for God's will to be done and then fail to conform our lives to that will.' Or something like that.

That quote hangs on the back of my front door and reminds me that if I want to have God's hand working on my behalf I need to make sure * I am allowing it* --- by being worthy to deserve those blessings.

  3. haha, yeah I sure need to have faith that oneday she will sleep better and to endure to the end of it. :)

This chapter got me thinking about the Liahona's that we have guiding us in these days. I think the scriptures are the biggest ones. Also the words of the latterday Prophets. Personal revelation is another one. Are we living worthy to receive it?

I found it quite strange to read about Lehi murmuring against the Lord when he was the one that had had the visions etc, but I guess everyone has their weak moments, and hunger can make us do things we wouldn't normally. I am very glad that the Lord has blessed me so that I don't have to suffer through the trial of not having sufficient food. I pray it continues that way.
