3 Nephi 15

3 Nephi 15

I think it's an interesting note that's often overlooked, that the Nephites very much lived the law of Moses, that was brought over with them by Lehi and his family in the brass plates.  At this point in time, they were living the same law of Moses as those in Jerusalem that killed Jesus.  I often wondered if these two separate people were living the same very strict law, how could they be so different?  I don't know the sure answer, but I can only guess it's because they lived the law (as well as they could) in humility.  I also seems that those in Jerusalem that lived the law of Moses had created a stronger society (not having to move around constantly to keep safe from enemies) and therefor had established church leaders that, in time, grew corrupt.

Because of the constant need for protection from the Lord, it kept the Nephites humble enough and righteous enough to see the Son of God.

The Savior went on to explain that because of the wickedness of the Jews, information was withheld from them because they would not understand it.

That principle must be an eternal one.  I think we are blessed with knowledge and experiences based on our level of humility and righteousness. (Though there are exceptions- Saul and Alma the Younger, etc)  But for the most part, the better we live, the more Heavenly Father trusts us with information and such.

To me that means we take what we are told and we trust it, learn it, love it.  Then we will be told more.  If we doubt or refuse it, we won't be given further knowledge. How much we can know and understand is really up to us.

What a cool principle!

I loved your thoughts on this one. I do agree that the more humble and obedient we are the more we will have the spirit to direct and help us throught our lives.
Thanks for the thoughts and keep on enjoying the moments with the Book of Mormon.

  2. When I was at BYU-Idaho, President Clark gave a devotional about personal commandments. He said that as we follow the principles and commandments God has given us, He will give us more and more. We will be living a higher and higher law as He gives us our own personal commandments to live by. He said when we have a prompting by the Spirit to visit a neighbor, call a friend, etc. that is a personal commandment. When we follow those promptings the Lord knows He can trust us and continues to give us more commandments through promptings and revelations. I just loved that! What a great gift from our Heavenly Father.

  3. I was having a conversation with someone about the theory of seeking spiritual gifts. One benefit for me lately, has been a clearer understanding of the scriptures as they are crossed over in Sunday School (NT) and personal study (BOM). Not that I have been asking for that one.

I have been asking for clearer promptings which I hope for as a result of obedience. It's all based on the cause/effect system. It's great to recognize the blessings from the Lord with something as simple as reading the scriptures or acting on a prompting.
