Alma 35

Alma 35

The Zoramites were upset because the word destroyed their craft.  It's in the wind of politics and the world these days?  I could go more into it, but I don't want to get too political and chase the Spirit away, lol. But, I have seen in time after time: people denying the word of God because it fouls their personal agenda.  Some people get upset with His will doesn't follow their will.

It's a slow morning for me, so I didn't get much more out of this (besides the nice warm-fuzzies I get from reading). So, I hope you have some wonderful words of wisdom to enlighten me!

  1. Our television has Pandora on it, which I love! I can pick my type of music and listen to it all day. When I turned the tv on this morning, there was a woman preaching to a HUGE Christian congregation. I actually sat down and listened to the powerful things she had to say.

Then I read this chapter and something did strike me. Did you realize that the "word" was used at least a dozen times? Well, one time was "breathing out threatenings" but I think that counts.

I pondered that. Words can be the most powerful witness or the hateful negative. It is more than "the word" being about God's word. It's about what we say. What we write. The words we choose.

And more importantly, what are the words we use, to ourselves, inside our own head that no one can hear?

The preacher was giving an example of her own bad attitude and how she was able to overcome it through God. One of her points was that she went to church, had bible study, etc., all with an attitude not in alignment with the spirit. But no one ever called her out on her behaviors. She finally had her own witness of the spirit and was able to fix it herself. But that is really hard when we don't see it for ourselves, just like the people in the BOM.

Alma was calling people out on their behaviors and bad attitudes. They did not appreciate it, even to the point of creating war.

Is the reason we keep using words to drag ourselves down because we cannot see what it does to ourselves and to those around us? Are we just blind? Do we rebel against being positive and uplifting to ourselves because it's easier to stay in our wicked frame of mind? If we only recognized how our negativity on our own self had an impact on others, we would probably stop short.

So, the "word" being used a dozen times in such a short chapter really struck me as important this morning. Words are very powerful. I know I am going to be careful today to watch the words I am saying in my own head that no one can hear.

  2. I love, love, love this comment! Thank you for enlightening me! I looked back at the chapter, and the "words" pop out to me. Then, when I read the next chapter, the same thing happens. This is one of those comments that will have an impact on my reading forever. I doubt I will ever read past the "word" and not acknowledge the depth of the meaning behind it. Thanks, And. You're awesome :)
