Alma 5:1-32

I feel like the beginning of Alma's speech is much like our paying homage to the pioneers. It is good to remember the sacrifices that were made so we can enjoy the gospel in our lives. It is also good to recognize the hand of the Lord in the work. That was what Alma was trying to tell them, 'Can you look back and see that God has orchestrated this so that you can have the gospel? Don't forget that.'

The imagery in verse 7 is beautiful: "He awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word."

Then in verse 9: "Yea, they were loosed, and their souls did expand."

Just beautiful. Alma was a poet.

Alma lays out the condition of redemption in this chapter: a mighty change of heart, humility, trust God, faithful to the end, spiritual rebirth, faith, works of righteousness, pure heart, clean hands, His image engraven upon your countenance, repentance through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
