Can you imagine the sorrow of those who survived to see their friends, wives, and children dead? I can't imagine.
It is made clear in verse 19 that the curse that was brought upon the Lamanites and Almicites was not undeserved, but brought upon by themselves. It is common belief to think that God will put us where He thinks we should be (in the next life), but the truth is that no man will end up where he didn't choose to be. We are the ones directing our own paths. It is us who decides how far we will go, and how to get there. It is us who decides if we receive the blessings that come from obedience, because we chose to be obedient.
We have the power to direct our paths for good or evil. We can't blame God for the consequences, because it was us the made the choice.
