Words of Mormon

Read online here

So good to be back!  Thank you for all your comments! I loved reading them!

Verses 1-9 gave me great insight into the kind of man Mormon was.   The first thing we learn about him is that he has witnessed horrible carnage and suffering--and yet, he does not dwell in it. He simply puts "I have witnessed almost all the destruction of my people, the Nephites."

I wonder if that would not have put doubt or anger into the hearts of most, who would feed on it until it comsumed them. But Mormon didn't. In the times when he had such great cause to be angry, resentful and question the nature of God (seeing thousands and thousands of his people sinning and murdered), he turned to the scriptures, and he kept his eye solely on God's will for him.

He had faith in God, enough faith to turn his son over to God, with a very clear understanding of what Moroni's end would probably be.

That's faith.

And still, Mormon is ok not knowing everything (7). He has the faith to act when reason might not be sufficient, because he has nurtured his relationship with God enough to hear God's will, and has the faith to follow that will, even if he doesn't quite understand the reason.

All Mormon knew was that God was working through him according to God's will. (7)

Perfect faith and submission. Not allowing doubts and/or questions to diminish his faith.  It reminds me of Elder Hollands talk in General Conference yesterday, which can be seen here if you missed it.

Mormon didn't know everything (7), but he didn't dwell on that. He worked as best he could according to what he was given (9).  He didn't allow discouragement, self-pity or doubt cloud his ability to be a tool in God's hands.  He knew he was imperfect. His life was filled with sorrow and horrific things. And yet, he trusted God implicitly.

He understood the strength, power and purposes of the Lord, and was able to look beyond his earthly circumstances to Him.

That is the kind of faith I strive for.

My life is nothing like his was, and yet there are times when I allow the doubts more room than they should be allotted, there are times when fear tries to creep in.

We bloom where we are planted. But we also wilt where we are planted. It is up to us--to me, to make AND see the best in life where ever I am.

I am inspire by Mormon's faith and his love and trust in the Lord, and have made a commitment to be and do better.

A great way to start the week!
