Alma 39

Oh, Corianton, you rebel. You were called to be a teacher and you lost your way.

Corianton's main problem was focus. He lost track on his eternal mission, and allowed himself to
focus on worldly things.

Your feet take you where your eyes are pointed (a Michelleism.) He was trusted with a ministry (4) and yet, he left it to pursue woman and riches.

I think that disappointed Alma.  But even more than just Corianton's poor choices, Alma understood the collateral damage his son's choices would cause among the Zoramites (11). Because of Corianton's choices, they failed to believe Alma's words. When Corianton was called to the ministry, he was no longer an island, but he became a companion in a greater purpose and a representative of the Savior and His church.

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we represent Him and His church. We can either bring people closer to Him, or chase them away, depending on our conduct. When we take upon ourselves His name, we don't represent just ourselves anymore. When we make our commitment to Him at baptism that we will take His name upon ourselves, this is what we commit to. Our actions not only impact ourselves and those around us, but the very mission of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
